The world is catching up to the idea that there is a need for gluten-free eats that don’t require a compromise on the part of the eater. The Kansas City Star reported that Mama Resch’s — a gluten-free bakery — will open next week at 12635 Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park. And Productos Dona Nora — the company behind the Eat Arepas food truck — is now offering the play-it-at-home version through Door to Door Organics (a local produce and grocery delivery service).
Arepa is a white corn flatbread that is well-known in South America. It can be sweet or savory, depending on the toppings. I think of it as the carb equivalent of frozen yogurt. The Eat Arepas food truck, one of the few still rolling in the metro for the winter season, has a standard dessert option ($3) that includes creamy peanut butter, Nutella and banana. The food truck also sells packages of flatbread to go.
For those who might need a lunch or dinner option, arepas are on the menu at Empanada Madness (906 Southwest Boulevard) and El Porton Cafe (4671 Indian Creek Parkway, Overland Park, Kansas). Empanada Madness just opened in September. You should follow The Pitch’s Charles Ferruzza’s recommendation and order La Rumbera — a tasty pyramid of pulled pork and melted gouda. Out in Overland Park, don’t miss the sweet plantains at El Porton Cafe, which just recently started offering brunch on Sundays between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
