Pumpkin beer is a little different. So it’s safe to say that Boulevard Brewing Co.’s Funky Pumpkin is a lotta different. The spiced sour sale should start hitting store shelves in the Kansas City area today. Here’s how Boulevard describes the brew:
Spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice and ginger, the final beer is a blend of brewhouse soured beer and beer aged in a stainless steel tank with brettanomyces. Tart and slightly earthy, Funky Pumpkin features a subtle toffee/caramel malt character that allows pumpkin pie spices to shine.
Sour beers are certainly having a moment. In the past month, everybody from NPR to Gizmodo to the Huffington Post to Men’s Journal has taken a swipe at both defining the trend and pointing out which brews should be poured down your gullet. Locally, KSHB recently did a piece on sour beer, including a visit to the Cinder Block Brewery.
Funky Pumpkin (ABV of 5.8%) will be available on tap and in six-packs. It’s not the only sour that Boulevard currently has available. Show Me Sour — their collaboration with Side Project out of St. Louis — is currently on in the brewery’s tap room (Funky Pumpkin should join it shortly) and will be poured at the Festival of the Lost Township this Saturday.[Image via Facebook: Boulevard]
