Call it cloudy with a chance of dark rye. Boulevard’s Grainstorm Black Rye IPA, the latest release in the Smokestack Series, hits shelves on Tuesday, March 11, and taps on Tuesday, March 18.
Boulevard gave The Recommended Daily a bottle that we naturally chilled in snow. Arguably the most hop punchy of Boulevard’s brews — Grainstorm has a big nose of hops that leads into a dense melange of barley, wheat, and rye (the aforementioned “grainstorm.”) The brew pours a-night-in-Kansas-farm-country-without-light-pollution-dark. It’s spicy and a bit grainy, although that may have seemed more pronounced because of the name. Here’s Boulevard brewer Jeremy Danner talking about the 2013 batch, which is when the beer first appeared in the Smokestack rotation.
Grainstorm is 7.7 percent alcohol by volume and 65 IBUs. The tasting notes recommend pairing it with “spicy sausage, barbecued meats, peppery cheeses and game.”
