We could all use some warmth right about now. And the Boulevard Brewing Co.’s current Smokestack Series release — Rye-on-Rye — is a proper bit of warmth. The rye ale, which is out on taps today and on shelves Tuesday, is aged in Templeton Rye barrels giving it a warm wood flavor that compliments the spice of the malted rye. It’s a little sweet, you might get some vanilla, with a clean finish. Despite being a strong brew — it clocks in at 47 IBUs and 12% alcohol by volume — past yearly releases have not been too boozy.
“I wasn’t a whiskey drinker before,” Boulevard brewer Jeremy Danner says. “This is the beer that taught me to drink whiskey.”
Boulevard’s been playing around with different rye styles in the past year. Their Westside Rye Ale is currently part of the sample 12-packs and they introduced the hop-forward Grainstorm Black Rye IPA in 2013. Rye-on-Rye, which was first made in 2010, is a limited Smokestack release. Boulevard typically produces about 1,500 kegs and 5,000 cases of the limited releases.
