Boulevard wants to take Kansas City to funky town this week. Saison-Brett, the brewery on Southwest Boulevard’s latest Smokestack Series release, is on taps and shelves now. It’s a busy month for Boulevard. They’re also set to introduce a new brew, Entwined Ale, a malt beverage made with Muscat grape juice (and based on the Test Nelson), to kick off the Backroads Beers label [The Recommended Daily broke the story yesterday].
Saison-Brett (8.5% ABV) should be thought of as a cousin to Tank 7, the popular Farmhouse Ale that has become a year-round Smokestack offering. But it’s a wild cousin — hopped up on yeast (most notably Brettanomyces) that gives it an earthy, fruity and funky body. Boulevard gave RD a bottle and there’s citrus upfront with a dry finish. The brewery recommends you pair Saison-Brett with English Stilton. I’m going to tell you to grab some Thai food — it works well to cool down/compliment spicy dishes. If you’re on the fence, this is a favorite of brewmaster Steven Pauwels and brewer Jeremy Danner.
Saison-Brett is taking the place of Love Child #4, a sour beer that has been pushed back to June, in the Smokestack lineup. This is one you can (and should) cellar.
