Set your DVRs and grab a slice of cake — a Kansas City cake artist and local food truck owner are slated to compete on the Food Network’s Cake Wars. Cake wizard Mike Elder and the Funnel Cake Truck’s Michael Bradbury are a team of contestants on the ‘Sound of Music‘ episode slated to air Monday, August 10, at 7 p.m.
Cake Wars is a reality cooking competition that pits four teams of cake artists against each other in a quest for a high profile cake engagement and $10,000. The show has two judged rounds where the cake creations are inspired by the episode’s theme (in this case, that’s the iconic film, The Sound of Music).
If not by name, you might recognize Elder’s face. The owner of Black Sheep Custom Cakes made several winning appearances on TLC’s ‘The Ultimate Cake Off,’ and has previously run a hot rod shop. A gearhead, his love of cars, often finds its way into cake form.
We wrote about the Funnel Cake Truck as part of our ‘Five Unique Takes on Candy in Kansas City,’ back in 2014. They have a deep-fried Snickers bar (it’s frozen, battered and super gooey) on their menu. A year earlier, The Pitch noted that Bradbury bought hundreds of cases of Twinkies (the truck sells deep-fried Twinkies too) when we all thought the golden tubes might be headed for the great pastry retirement home in the sky.
If you miss it on August 10, the episode will re-run on Tuesday, August 11, at 2 a.m. and Saturday, August 15, at 1 a.m.[Cake Wars logo via the Food Network]
