Cheese Slipper Saturday at Fervere and other weekend possibilities

The cheese slipper is not your average cheesy bread.

The cheese slipper is not your average cheesy bread.

If you want sweet dreams on Saturday, you need to get yourself a cheese slipper. Fervere’s (1702 Summit) Cheese Slipper Saturday returns this Saturday and we say get thee to the Westside bread shop. The standard cheese slippers, available Thursday through Saturday, are crispy ciabatta topped and infused with cheddar cheese and garlic cheese curds. But on Saturday nights in the summertime, the cheese slippers come with everything from eggs to local mushrooms. The regular offering is a fine representative of bread — the Saturday night special is the kind of thing you talk about all week. The doors open at 6 p.m., the line usually forms in the late five o’clock hour. Stop by Little Freshie (811 W 17th Street) and get a snow cone or flavored soda (strawberry rhubarb and lemon prickly pear are both currently on the menu) for the wait.

Festa Italiana returns to Zona Rosa (8640 N Dixon Avenue) this weekend. The music starts tonight at 5:15 p.m. and the meatball eating contest kicks off at 8 p.m. Italian Delight’s John Avelluto will do a cooking demonstration at 11 a.m. tomorrow and the cannoli eating contest gets started a half hour later. There will be live music, Italian fare and a beer garden to occupy you the rest of the day. Sunday features classic Italian cars and a pasta eating contest at 1 p.m.

The Raytown Farmers Market (6210 Raytown Road) — a new market on Thursdays and Saturdays, is open for the first time this Saturday. And they’ve got bacon chocolate chip cookies, in addition to what you need for a proper salad. The market is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Find out everything you wanted to know and eat about kosher food at Ohev Sholom’s (5311 West 75th Street, Prairie Village) Kosher Fest this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. As for entertainment, there will be a bounce house and cooking demonstrations. You can also dive into cabbage rolls, knishes, blintzes, kugels and falafel.

We’re hosting the After Crawl Brunch with The Lab on Sunday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Black Dog Coffeehouse. It’s a coffee and breakfast kind of thing between the two shifts of the KC Caffeine Crawl — a guided whirl through the caffeine, tea and chocolate shops of Kansas City. Come meet us and learn about latte art and cold brew while eating Smokin’ Fresh Streetside BBQ’s breakfast sandwiches made with the whole barnyard.
