Let the hot stove talk begin. The Pitch recently broke the news that chef Debbie Gold has parted ways with the restaurant group behind the Red Door Grill (11851 Roe, Leawood). The James Beard Award winner, one of four in Kansas City (Celina Tio, Colby Garrelts and Michael Smith are the other members of that exclusive group), is currently looking at where she’ll next ply her knives.
“I may use my culinary skills in a different way,” Gold says. “I love cooking, being in restaurants and being in the kitchen. But I don’t know what’s out there and what’s next.”
Gold left the American Restaurant (200 East 25th Street, #400) in April 2013 to join the new restaurant group with Jason Gleaton and Gary Zancanelli. The Red Door Grill opened last June. It was Gold’s second turn as the executive chef at The American, having served as co-executive chef with Smith from 1994 to 2001. Gold and Smith left to open 40 Sardines, before she returned to the Crown Center institution in 2008. The opportunity to be a partner in a new local concept was attractive to Gold; but the restaurant didn’t align with her initial vision.
“I’m glad I did it. There are no hard feelings,” Gold says. “The original idea was starting a restaurant company and doing different concepts in a growing restaurant market. I think the original idea is a really good one, but it wasn’t meant to be.”[Image via Facebook: Red Door Grill]
