Draft taps The Belfry for its list of ‘The Best New Beer Restaurants’

Beer is proving to be as transformational for a menu as a well-regarded wine list. And Draft Magazine thinks that Kansas City has one of the spots that’s leading the way for the burgeoning gastronomic movement. They tapped The Belfry (1532 Grand), Celina Tio’s beer bar attached to Collection, for their list of ‘The Best New Beer Restaurants.‘ Here’s some of Draft had to say about Tio and Belfry (which opened in January):

The James Beard award- winning chef is surprisingly accessible, an attitude that translates into this sunny spot’s approach to dining and drinking. A pocket-sized menu of feel-good food (“What mama never made you, but wanted to,” Tio jokes), places comforting, beer-friendly plates of chicken nachos, judiciously slathered in gooey Manchego cheese and sherry onions, alongside lip-smacking spins on KC classics like Berkshire pork ribs, served with fries and hoppy pickles (sweet, briny cukes hopped with Citra and Cascade). Early risers can scoop up stuffed croissants before heading to work.

The beer-centered magazine also gave a shout-out to Triple in St. Louis — a Belgian restaurant that has moules frites and plenty of Saison. In Kansas City, the hoppy pickles at The Belfry (pictured above) are reason enough to sit at the bar. Grab them and a formidable IPA on tap (Green Flash Palate Wrecker, if it’s available) for the first of what will likely be several beers.

Tio — who has brewed beers with New Belgium Brewing in the past — was recently at Jolly Pumpkin. She had a brew day and blended a beer that will be available only at the Ann Arbor brewery and The Belfry. On June 17, she’s hosting a Jolly Pumpkin dinner at 6 p.m. Tickets are $75.
