Is Kansas City an up-and-coming foodie city?

121913-kansas-city Food can be an all-consuming passion. It can be the reason that you lose sleep, miss work and discover that your savings are not exactly savings.

I think Minneapolis and of course both Portlands (Oregon and Maine) are hitting their pinnacle right now, and Kansas City, Mo. is on the rise for sure with chefs Colby and Megan Garrelts. -Graham Elliot

Food, in fact, can define a city. Television programming has been built around fried chicken rivalries, mayors bet their metro’s finest on playoff games and the first place any reporter will stop in at a small town to find out what’s happening is the local diner. And now, at the end of 2013, chef Graham Elliot has told Forbes that Kansas City is becoming a food destination courtesy of Megan and Colby Garrelts — the owners of Rye (10551 Mission Road, Leawood) and Bluestem (900 Westport Road). If you feel like you’ve heard that before, Saveur’s James Oseland pointed to Portland (of the Oregon variety) and Kansas City as two spots that would have their moment in 2012.
