Jingle Balls. The Local Pig’s X-mas meatballs for Harvesters is back.

So, we might not be improving upon the original lyrics of Jingle Bells, but you can do some good via a holiday tradition at the Local Pig (2618 Guinotte Avenue).

The butcher in the East Bottoms is bringing back its buy-one, give-one deal for Harvesters. You buy a box of two dozen meatballs for $24 and they donate a box of two dozen meatballs to the community food network.

“We like the idea of having fresh meat for people for Christmas,” Local Pig owner Alex Pope says. “We give product to homeless shelters and they always tell us that they never get fresh meat.”

The idea of a benefit for Harvesters started with a collaboration tamale with Port Fonda’s Patrick Ryan four years ago. Pope made the decision to swap in Italian meatballs in 2013. The Local Pig’s meatballs are made with pork, pecorino, fresh rosemary, breadcrumbs and eggs. Last year, Pope estimates that the shop gave away nearly 5,000 meatballs.

“People have started telling us it’s something they do every year,” Pope says. “It’s just such a nice atmosphere in the shop, we can bring in extra people to make the meatballs, and it makes us feel good.”

The meatballs are available for order right now and pick-up between Tuesday, December 15, and Thursday, December 24.
