Behold the power of diner might. The comfort food and homemade pies that Lawrence has been craving is here. The Ladybird Diner opens Friday at 721 Massachusetts Street.
Back in July, The Recommended Daily chatted with Meg Heriford, the diner’s owner and operator, about her plans to serve her biscuits, truck stop omelets and pot roast. Heriford, who has been a server and pie baker at 715 since it opened in 2009, was approached by the ownership group (chef Michael Beard, Matt Hyde, Matt Cullen and Tom Carmody) of the Lawrence restaurant about opening a diner a few doors down.
Ladybird, so named for the former first lady Claudia “Ladybird” Johnson, has completely revamped the former Dynamite Saloon (attached to Buffalo Bob’s Smokehouse) space. There are Pyrex bowl pendant lights, sparkly vinyl counter stools and diner booths that are pure Americana. The menu features the classics as well, with chocolate phosphates, fried chicken, pot pie, Cincinnati chili and meatloaf. The pies will emerge from an oven nicknamed ‘Bess,’ that can crank out up to 16 pies at a time.
“The bar is kind of high on this stuff. We’re competing with people’s moms and grandmas and beloved aunties,” Heriford told The Recommended Daily last month. “This is mama’s table. What you need, we’ll do.”
Ladybird Diner will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The phone number is 785-856-5239.[Images via Facebook: Ladybird Diner]
