Spring in Kansas City is not flowers blooming or birds singing. Spring in Kansas City arrives when Murray’s Ice Cream & Cookies (4120 Pennsylvania Avenue) returns from its annual winter hibernation. The Westport scoop shop will re-open on Friday, March 18.
Murray’s is an ice cream institution in KC — owner Murray Nixon has run the shop for 32 years. They’ve got a coffee/soda bar inside as well as fresh-baked cookies (pro tip: pick a pair of cookies and one of the rotating flavors and make yourself an ice cream sandwich roughly the size of Rhode Island). More often than not, a sugary waft of freshly baked waffle cones greets you when you open the front door. The 16 flavors rotate weekly, but some like Chocolate Flake Fromage and One Drunk Monk are regulars in the rotation.
Murray’s is open from Thursday to Sunday from 12 to 9 p.m.
And like always, it’s cash only. For the cash strapped — last year, they started accepting debit and credit cards.
