Suffering from dry whistle? You have options, Kansas City. A trio of new spots — Ollie’s Local, Ruins Pub, and Plaza Liquor — that were built with drinkers in mind have opened in the last month.
Ollie’s Local (3044 Gillham Road) is an intentional throwback. The new spot marks a return to Martini Corner for owner Eddie Crane, a former owner of The Drop. Ollie’s has classic cocktails and the kind of sandwiches where you roll your sleeves up to the elbows and try not get your tie in the spicy garlic mayo on the BLT. Located in the former Haus location, they’re serving up spreadable beer cheese, whiskey and rum punch, wine on tap (prosecco and pinot grigio), and a pair of cocktails on tap: Horsefeather and Gin Tonic.
They’ve also got Happy Hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday with The Hemingway (bourbon, lemon sugar and orange), The Workingman’s Friend (a shot and a beer, we’d opt for a Tecate and a Four Roses Yellow) and a pitcher of Boulevard Tank 7 for $19.99 (which we’ll just affectionately call the ‘Uber Special.’). Ollie’s Local is open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Their phone number is 816-541-3961.
Kansas City has its first you-pour bar in the Ruins Pub (1715 Main Street). The self-serve bar, in the spot that previously housed The Bulldog, lets you pick from 40 taps and then charges you by the ounce based on what you buy. You purchase a swipe card a la Dave & Busters. The decor is eclectic — there’s a VW bus that has been turned into seating in the center of the bar — and wall murals that evoke Eastern Europe. Ruins Pub is open from 11 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. Sunday. The phone number is 816-599-6667.
Former Berbiglia Wine & Spirits’ locations are getting new life across the city [You can read The Pitch’s story here on the local liquor chain’s downsizing from seven stores to one location earlier this year]. The latest to reopen is Plaza Liquor, just off the Plaza at 4500 Belleview Avenue. The phone number is 816-531-5900.
