Pappy’s Smokehouse bests Arthur Bryant’s in The Munchies

arthurbryant's-041514Opinions about barbecue are like zombies as plot devices — they just keep coming, whether you want them or not. Kansas City lost a barbecue crown this year, as Pappy’s Smokehouse in St. Louis bested Arthur Bryant’s in the Best BBQ category of the annual The Munchies People’s Choice Food Awards.

The three-year-old contest put on by Tablespoon has celebrity judges — headed by food personality Andrew Zimmern — pick category nominees. The public then gets a chance to weigh in on whose cuisine or food product reigns supreme. The Boulevard Brewing Co. was one of five nominees in the craft beer category this year, falling to Dogfish Head out of Milton, Delaware.

Pappy’s does Memphis-style barbecue in Missouri. They’re known for their dry-rubbed ribs smoked on apple and cherry wood, but they also dish up Frito pie and fried corn on the cob. In 2013, Oklahoma Joe’s took the crown home to KC. The first year of the contest, there was no barbecue category.
