The Golden Ox, Woodyard Bar-B-Que & Plowboys Barbeque get a star turn on Travel Channel’s BBQ Crawl

Dimovski stops in at the Golden Ox, Woodyard Bar-B-Que and Plowboys Barbeque later this month.

BBQ Crawl — a Travel Channel series that melds the eat-a-logue genre (one man or woman eating their way across the United States) with the competition barbecue circuit — will shine its light on Kansas City next Wednesday.

The show, now in its second season, tracks Danielle “Diva Q” Dimovski as she and her team compete at contests across the United States. In the course of her travels, she also manages to stop by local barbecue joints in an effort to capture the flavor of the city where she is competing.

Kansas City is featured in two shows airing in August. The first includes a visit to the Golden Ox at 1600 Genessee Street #100 (get the Prime Rib French dip at lunch..and you’re welcome), Woodyard Bar-B-Que (3001 Merriam Lane, Kansas City, Kansas) for pecan smoked salmon and burnt end chili (a contender for the best chili in the city) and Plowboys Barbeque (3111 S Missouri 7, Blue Springs, Missouri). Todd Johns — who has been competing in barbecue contests since 2001 — opened his Blue Springs restaurant last September. Plowboys is becoming known for its pulled pork, but they’re also offering some unconventional specials: July featured a smoked brisket chili dog.

The second episode in Kansas City is centered on Diva Q’s experience at last year’s American Royal (remember the lightning?). They turned in 13 categories at the competition in the West Bottoms.

The BBQ Crawl episode featuring the KC area restaurants, airs Wednesday, August 13, at 9 p.m. on the Travel Channel. The American Royal episode is Wednesday, August 20, at 9 p.m. There will be a watch party at the Plowboys on the 13th.

    Seriously?

    Had plowboys pulled pork on their 2nd night open and it was the worst I’ve ever had. Bland and tasteless come to mind, as well as gross as there was a ring of grease under my bun. So you’ll excuse me when I laugh at the suggestion they are becoming known for their pulled pork. Only how awful it is! Maybe it has gotten better, but I live close and never see anyone in the parking lot. Those first few days it was an Oklahoma Joe’s style wait for food, and totally not worth it. Haven’t been back since.

      Pulled pork is our number one seller day in and day out. Kind of harsh to judge a place on only their second day of being open when, as you say, they are dealing with “Oklahoma Joes lines”. Those were some crazy times. As prepared as we thought we were, we weren’t. Maybe you need to come back and try it again a year later now that the staff has had 12 months to perfect things. Hell, I’ll even buy your meal. Just ask for Todd.
