The shandy is an unfairly maligned drink. Typically made with a combination of beer and lemonade (or ginger beer or a lemon-lime soda), the beer cocktail can be dismissed as a lightweight in a universe of hop forward ales and midnight black stouts.
But a great shandy — one local example would by the Ginger Shandy at McCoy’s Public House (4057 Pennsylvania Avenue) — can be a beautiful compliment to a meal or as close as humankind can come to the easy happiness of a dog sleeping in the sunshine. Just down the road from McCoy’s is a new libation, the ‘KC Shandy’ at chef Patrick Ryan’s Port Fonda (4141 Pennsylvania), for your consideration.
Little Freshie (811 W. 17th St.) and Port Fonda have been collaborating on margaritas since October. The latest is a beer cocktail made with Boulevard’s Tank 7 (which is now on tap at the restaurant, alongside Boulevard Wheat and Irish Ale), Tres Agave blanco tequila and Little Freshie’s grapefruit and thyme syrup. It comes in a pint glass rimmed with grapefruit salt and pink peppercorn. The margarita special changes every two weeks, so the KC Shandy will only be available until January 23rd.[Image via Port Fonda]
