Sasha’s Baking Company’s Pain aux Chocolat is a worthy indulgence

Repeat after me. I’ll have the chocolate bread, please.

The pain aux chocolat ($4.50) is often the first thing out of the pastry case at Sasha’s Baking Company (105 West 9th Street) for a reason. The flaky croissant rolled around two fat lines of sumptuous dark chocolate is the kind of guilty pleasure that the downtown set should be having for second breakfast.

sasha's-exterior-010914The new bake shop, which Jeremy and Michelle Schepmann opened last November in the former Cosby Hotel space right next to the Milwaukee Delicatessen (101 West 9th Street), is a comfortable mix of sleek modern wood and classic touches like the oversized chandelier hanging just inside the doorway.

The pastries in the refrigerated cases range from a gougere (a savory biscuit-like pastry made with gruyere, black pepper and thyme) to macarons and eclairs. Atop the cases are inviting stacks of baguettes and loaves of wheat, rye, sourdough and pain rustique.

Sasha’s Baking Company is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. It’s closed on Sunday and Monday. The phone number is 816-474-9935.
