The meats are being braised, the veggies are being pickled and Taco Zone has found a brick-and-mortar home. The pop-up taco shop, that gained a loyal following during weekend stints at the Replay Lounge, has opened its own shop at 13 E 18th Street.
At the taqueria, run by Brad Shanks and his brother-in-law Brian Ayers, diners have a choice of three tacos, burritos, tortas, quesadillas or guacamole and chips. Their specialities are braised meats — chicken mole poblano, cochinita pibil (roasted pork), steak and sweet potato in red sauce, and shrimp tinga — were served on opening day. But they always have a vegetarian option or two, like refried black beans with queso or mushrooms with caramelized onions and cilantro. For drinks, it’s Coke, house agua frescas (flavors like limonada, cucumber mint-lime, or Jamaica armando), beer and margaritas.
The taqueria at 13 E 18th Street is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. They’ll also continue to operate their stand at the Replay Lounge (946 Massachusetts) on Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday from 6 to 11 p.m.
