The Brookside Farmers Market returns and other weekend possibilities

The Brookside Farmers' Market kicks off its season Saturday.

The Brookside Farmers’ Market kicks off its season Saturday.

Stock your crisper with the first veggies of the season — the Brookside Farmers’ Market (63rd and Wornall in the parking lot of Border Star Montessori) returns this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stock up on bread, meat, ice cream and produce, as well as get your first bite of baked goods from Heirloom Bakery & Hearth —  a new KC bakery in the works at 401 E 63rd Street. As part of the opening day festivities, they’ll be drawing tickets every 30 minutes for $10 gift certificates for the market.

If you’re looking to kick-start your own garden, the Badseed Farmers’ Market (1909 McGee) is having an organic plant sale from 4 to 9 p.m today. You’ll be able to find heirloom tomatoes, peppers, edible flowers, eggplant, chard and leafy greens.

You don’t get many shots to swill grog and dance a jig. If that’s your game, The Pirates Ball is tonight from 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m at Drexel Hall (3301 Baltimore). They’ll be fire spinners, dancers and singers. Tickets are $18.95 in advance or $23.95 at the door.

It’s Kansas Craft Beer Week through Sunday. Barley’s Brewhaus (11924 W 119th Street, Overland Park) will have Tallgrass (8 Bit Pale Ale with citra hops and orange peel), Empyrean (cask of 3rd Stone with raspberry and rhubarb) and Free State (Couver de Saison) tap surprises tonight beginning at 5 p.m.

Those with a sweet tooth should head over to Hyde Park’s Spring Frolic and Egg Hunt on Sunday. The public park at 38th and Gillham hosts an Easter Egg Hunt (which begins at 1 p.m.) free of charge for children up to 10 years old. There’s also cotton candy, face painting and pony rides, all of which starts at 12:30 p.m.
