Westport’s Strong Ale Fest & other weekend possibilities

weekend-111414The Strong Ale Fest returns for a fourth year Saturday in Westport. BeerKC — the team behind McCoy’s Public House, The Foundry and Beer Kitchen — host the ale festival on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of McCoy’s from 1 to 5 p.m. More than 30 breweries (including 4 Hands, Perennial, Southern Tier, Traquir House and the Red Stone Meadery) are participating. Tickets (which include a commemorative tasting glass) are $35 in advance and $45 at the door. Get your fill of crumpets and tea, as the Daughters of the British Empire present the 29th annual British Faire Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Lenexa Community Center (93rd and Pflumm). Tea ($14, includes admission) starts being served at 11 a.m. Admission is $4 for adults, $1 for children.

Logboat Brewing arrives in Kansas City tonight. Their brews, made in Columbia, Missouri, will be at Californos (4124 Pennsylvania) and be tapped at 5 p.m. The first 100 to buy a beer get to keep the pint glass.

The Martin City Brewing Company began distributing its brews in Kansas City this week. Keep an eye out for the Benetti’s Coffee Stout — a bright punch of coffee — and the Belgian Blond. They’re on tap at Lew’s, The Well and Bier Station.

The Weston Wine Company offers ‘Adults-Only Hot Chocolate’ on Saturdays in November. They blend their semi-sweet Radiant Cut red wine with hot cocoa and top it with whipped cream. The $5 drink is available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays.

Andre’s Confisserie Suisse (5018 Main Street) just added happy hour to its new cafe and wine bar. Happy Hour items are 25 percent off between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

How does a polar bear eat a giant cupcake? However they want to…Nikita, the polar bear who lives at the Kansas City Zoo, is eight years old and the zoo is celebrating Saturday. Watch Nikita devour a giant cupcake at 11 a.m. and again at 2 p.m.

JJ’s Restaurant (900 West 48th Place) is back. They’re open Friday (11 a.m. to 4 p.m., 5 to 11 p.m.), Saturday (5 to 11 p.m.) and Sunday (5 to 10 p.m.) for dinner.
