Who has the best burnt ends in Kansas City?

It’s not the size of the burnt ends that matters, but the amount of bark in each bite. The quintessential Kansas City barbecue item got the Eater treatment (they’re doing a lovely series called The 5 Days of Meat) yesterday with Bonjwing Lee (who you may know from his gustatory adventures under the handle of the Ulterior Epicure) tackling 12 plates of burnt ends from local barbecue joints.

In addition to some crackling photos (they’re worth the click alone), Lee found love for the charred nuggets from Gates Bar-B-Q, LC’s Bar-B-Q (which The Kansas City Star reported earlier this week will be opening a second location in Grandview), Papa Bob’s Bar-B-Que and Oklahoma Joe’s. Here at The Recommended Daily, we give the crown to LC’s (5800 Blue Parkway). The rich cubes of meat are juicy, nestled in a crunchy, smoky crust.

So, let’s get into it brisket lovers, who has the best burnt ends in Kansas City? Keep it civil and defend your choice in the comments.

I would have to go with OK Joe’s. LC’s is good as well. Personally, I have never cared for Gates.

Whoa, whoa. You’ve never cared for Gates the restaurant, or Gates’ burnt ends? I highly recommend them since they’re actually burnt ends from their ribs, not brisket ends. Very different experience!

I could care less how goo the food tastes, I refuse to be rushed and yelled at when I enter a restaurant

I like the restaurant- it’s fun to do the whole ‘ Hi, may i help u!’ schtick- but the burnt ends just never did it for me from there.

I’m partial to BB’s Lawnside BBQ! Such a fun environment and delicious food!

The Gates “Burnt Ends” served on a bun is my favorite sandwich in town. They nail the ratio of char/crispy bits/fat. I’m also of the belief that Gates original sauce is the best in town, and therefore the best in the world. I know they have quality and consistency issues all around their menu, but that sandwich does the damn thing every time.

I do, but they’re not for sale . . . . yet. So, until then, here are my top four in no particular order.

    LC’s Bar-B-Q

Oklahoma Joe’s (rumor has it that 47th St. now serves burnt ends every day)

      Rod,

Your “Zero to Hero” rub is the best rub I’ve come across in years. Great stuff.

I’ve got to go with Danny Edwards Boulevard BBQ. Always succulent and tender with great crispy bark and a deep smoky flavor. Oklahoma Joe’s is a close second.

Jon Russel’s BBQ 4 locations. 135th Quivera original location. The BEST burnt ends you will have.

BB’s has a microwave in their kitchen. That’s a big no-no for me. I ordered burnt ends and they were so hot I couldn’t touch them for 5 minutes. I’ll go with Danny Edwards.

Believe it or not (I did not), Jon Russell’s. Yes it is kind of a chain, yes it is in a strip mall, yes there is not much else there worth eating, but the Burnt Ends OHHHHH the Burnt Ends. They have a nice bark, the perfect amount of fat, and so juicy and tender. I pride myself on my taste in food and without a doubt they are the best in KC. PS good thing they are good enough to eat w/o sauce, it’s not that good either.
