Firkin Fest and where else you should plan to be this weekend

firkin-fest-011514There’s just something about small batch beers and big Hollywood blockbusters. KC Beer Blog and Screenland Armour (408 Armour Road, North Kansas City) are teaming up for the Firkin Fest — tapping six casks from Empyrean, Lagunitas, Left Hand, New Belgium, Summit and Tallgrass over the next two days.

Two beers will be tapped tonight at 8:30 p.m. before Fight Club starts at 9 p.m.  Another four beers will be tapped Saturday at 5:30 p.m., with Team America slated for 6 p.m. and Aliens at 8 p.m. The movies are $10, sample pours are $3 and a pint is $6.

Kansas City Restaurant Week starts today and runs through Sunday, January 26. Earlier this week, we recommended five reservations that you should make from the list of 132 participating restaurants.

Michael Smith Restaurant (1900 Main Street) embraced winter and added some new seasonal dishes to the menu. Their wild boar tortellini — a New Year’s eve special made with brown butter, sage, chestnuts and toasted walnuts — is one of the plates that should be regularly leaving the kitchen.

Seed-Savers of Greater Kansas City is holding its annual Winter Seed & Bulb Exchange on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2p.m. at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center (4750 Troost Avenue). Bring an envelope for seeds and a notepad. This isn’t just a chance to pick up some free seeds, it’s a good opportunity to learn exactly how those seeds will end up bearing fruit in your garden.
